I Will Sing Praises of His Name

I Will, in 2023 (Ps 9) - Sing praises of His name

Psalm 9:2 says, “I will be glad and rejoice in you. I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.”

I will sing, David says! His joy overflows into song. And of course he was a musician, and so he probably enjoyed singing. In today's world, there are singers and there are people who don't really sing. But we can all sing in our hearts, and we can all lift up our hands and praise God, and sing words to him that are meaningful, whether we sing in key or not. Hear me - you can sing to God whether you sing in key or not. He's not looking to check that you hit the right notes, He's just looking at your heart.

Singing God's Praise

There's something powerful about singing His praise. We sing at church, of course, and then on Sunday nights I do Encounter, which is a worship session, just four or five songs with some praise in between. I so love doing those because it gives me a chance to lift up my voice and sing His praise. I hope you'll join me this year as I start to Encounter. I'm only going to start it in a week or two, but you'll see the link come on the group on Sunday with the video. I hope you'll join me in sessions like that, and I hope you'll go to your church and sing with the other people of God.

I hope you'll sing in them shower and in your car. I hope that there'll always be a song on your lips because there is something powerful that happens when we sing God's praise.

Listen the words of John Wesley, which he wrote at the front of one of the Methodist hymnals back in his time. He wrote “Sing lustily and with a good courage, beware of singing as if you were half dead or half asleep, but left up your voice with strength. Be no more afraid of your voice now, nor more ashamed of its being heard than when you sung the songs of Satan.”

Year of Worship

I hope that our churches and our homes will be filled with much song this year, and that like David, we will resolve right now that we will sing to God because He deserves our praise.

And music has a way of really helping us to express the way we feel. Go and find some worship songs, and sing them. New, old, in between, that's not important. What's important is that you find songs that give God glory and tell his story and that you sing them day by day by day this year.

Oh, what a year it'll be if it's a year of much singing and worship in God.
