Seeking God in Quiet Moments

Seeking God in quiet moments

Let's talk about how to seek God. Firstly, let's seek God in quiet moments. The world is so noisy. Would you agree? There's a lot of distraction, a lot of sound. Our smartphones are so full of potential, they provide a lot of good things. But they provide a constant stream of distractions.

Digital Distractions

In fact, I read an article a little while back where the writer was saying, How would John Wesley have coped in today's world of great digital distractions? Because he was a man of great prayer and quietness. He spent much time in the Word and in prayer - hours every day. He would take time to be still and spend moments with God, and when he rode his horse around, he would read Scripture and pray. And the author said, If Wesley had been born in 1985, would he have been as effective because of all the constant digital distractions he would have had to deal with?

And, you know, I feel that pull myself, to my devices. They're so convenient. I have Bible software on my PC. I have my notebooks on my computer and my phone, so I don't need to waste paper. But as a result, I so often go to my devices to have my quiet time. And then there are so many distractions. I want to recommit today to seeking God in quiet moments, turning off the devices, putting away the potentially distracting things like phones and tablets, TVs; getting quiet with God, reading his Word with care, praying deeply and fervently. You can't do that if you're not intentional about it.

Led Beside Quiet Waters

In fact, remember Psalm 23, which says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.” God beckons you and I to join him in the green pastures, friends, the quiet waters where our souls will be refreshed day after day. Will you intentionally set aside times of quiet in the days and weeks to come?

Wilberforce’s Commitment to Quiet

You know, I'll never forget reading about William Wilberforce, a great man of God, in years gone past and the author of his biography, said he was struck by how much value Wilberforce placed on constant prayer and meditation. And he wrote “he was a man who was overwhelmed by the press of public duties and engagement with momentous interests of all sorts occupying his thoughts and attention, who always set aside regular times for prayer and reading of the Bible.”

And so join me, friends, in a Wilberforce-like commitment to quiet moments with God. There's nothing so powerful and transformative as a regular, quiet time with God when we meet with Him and are blessed by him.
