"Building trust: A path illuminated by honesty, reliability, and open communication. Two hands reach out, bridging the gap between skepticism and assurance, creating a foundation of mutual understanding and dependability on the journey to find trust.

We’re talking about reaching for God’s Word, and the Psalmist spoke of in the great Psalm 119. In verse 41 yesterday we read “May your unfailing love come to me, LORD, your salvation, according to your promise” and the Psalmist goes on to say this in verse 42: “then I can answer anyone who taunts me, for I trust in your word”.

I trust in your word.

Do you trust in God’s Word?

Defending Trust in God's Word Amidst Modern Skepticism

We live in a world that has largely lost its trust in God’s Word. Over the past few centuries, Western culture has become increasingly mistrustful of anything spiritual. And so there is a great field of study devoted to destroying our world’s trust in the Bible as God’s Word – many people today who would call themselves committed Christians think that the Bible is an old historical document, which we must read through our culture’s lens. And so we can take the bits we like, but leave out the more difficult stuff that doesn’t fit with our culture’s desires and dreams.

This is a dangerous way of thinking. I believe that if we can’t trust all of God’s Word, then we can’t trust any of it.

The Psalmist, in our verse today, declares it straight out: “I trust in your word”! And he says that it is this trust that gives him answers for anyone who taunts him. In today’s world, Christians who believe in the authority of God’s Word are certainly taunted, mocked, made fun of. But it’s in those moments that we have to hold fast to our faith and trust that what the Bible says is the truth! That God did reveal his full plan for salvation by inspiring the writers of these books, so that all people could discover the truth down through the ages.

God's Word: A Trustworthy Weapon in Spiritual Battles

In fact, the Word of God becomes a trustworthy weapon in our spiritual battles too. When our spiritual enemy, the devil, taunts and mocks us and makes us doubt, we use the Word of God to fight him off – Paul said in Ephesians 6:17 that the Bible is the sword of the Spirit! And of course Jesus showed us how to use that sword when he resisted the devil in the desert by quoting Scripture to him time and again.

If it was good enough for Jesus, then it’s good enough for me!

Today, join the Psalmist in saying to God “I trust in your word”. And then spend each day diving into God’s Word, taking it to heart, memorizing it, standing on its promises – especially when the taunts and mocking words of the enemy come. Not even he has an answer to the power of God’s trustworthy Word.
